Phil Trott is the Director of IT at SLOCOE and he is a suuuper nice guy. If you really wanted to impress this idea onto him, his e-mail address is ptrott@slocoe.org . From my experience working as a Network Engineer at the County as well as for Lucia Mar USD I can tell you that if someone posed that idea cold to the IT Directors of the County USD's as well as SLOCOE it would probably generate a lot of momentum very quickly.

Commenting on my own post: Another idea is taking advantage of research and development grants for projects involving Internet2 and the Internet in general, that are offered by the federal government and private industry. Do a quick google on "internet2 grants" see what the possibilities are.

If interesting projects are chosen, I could see some students really get into it.
